You’ve got things to do, so let me get straight to the point. You need a brand.
I’m not talking about a logo, website or business card. I’m talking about you and your professional brand. Why? Because there are a million widget makers, tutors, coaches, accountants, restaurant owners, recruiters, etc. You are in an ocean of competitors who do the same thing you do. In fact, do you want a great way to measure how much competition exists in your area? Do a google search for your industry in your city and see how many results come up. It’s staggering.
What is more staggering is that your competitors probably provide the same core products/services as you do. And who knows? They may even be better at it than you are.
Before you shut down your shop, turn in your resignation or raise the white flag, hear this: It doesn’t matter. If you have a compelling brand that goes with a quality product or service, you can win.
The Good News
So what’s the good news? Developing a brand is really not that hard. Why? Because all you need to do to create a brand is look in the mirror.
- You are different.
- No one has lived the life you live.
- Your experiences are unparalleled.
- Your story is what gives you a unique business perspective that no one in this world can replicate.
- What you are passionate about and the reasons why belong only to you.
Do you understand? Even if your competitors have the same products or services and even if they are better at business than you are, it doesn’t matter! Your competitors are not you.
How to Create a Compelling Brand
Think about and answer:
- What exists inside you that no one else has?
- What are the defining moments of your life?
- How have those defining moments shaped your approach to your business, customers and community?
- Are you quirky? If so, that’s a good thing – it makes you more human. So what are your quirky attributes?
- If you could pick and choose which clients to work with, who would your most favorite clients be? Write a detailed description; there is something in your answer that will help you define your target market.
- How do people regularly describe your products or services?
- For what do people routinely compliment you?
The Branding Bottom Line
Your brand is staring you right in the face. Now you just need to put words around it. What words will you use?
