What would your cup of joe taste like without a coffee filter? Filters on camera lenses create astounding camera effects. There are filters that do really important jobs: water filters, chemical filters and even nuclear filters that provide ventilation for flammable gas mixtures in nuclear waste containers. Filters do good things.
Some filters can be destructive.
Our facilitators at the Disney Institute told us that in 1934, Walt Disney proposed creating the world’s first 90-minute cartoon, Snow White. What we take for granted today, was met with outrage then, particularly from the medical community. Physicians all over the nation said that anyone who watched a 90-minute cartoon would go blind. The public said that making this film would tarnish Mickey’s reputation. Of course, we know the end result today. They were wrong. Snow White premiered in 1937 and made over 8 million dollars… in the 30’s… 8 million dollars. Walt used this revenue to build Disney Studios.
Think about the filter of “what will others think of me?” Is that a constructive or a destructive filter? Our instructors said it is. If “what will others think of me” was an important filter to Walt, would Disney exist today? The facilitators asked us to think about a toddler who is taking his first steps. I thought about when my niece starting to walk. If you’ve ever seen this, you know what happens. The toddler is not thinking about how stupid he’s going to look because he doesn’t know how to walk. The toddler has one goal – to make it from his Mommy’s fingers to the sofa. Period.
What would happen if you were as focused on your goals today as you were when you started to walk? What would your Snow White be?
